The Playlist of My Life
Updated: Mar 5, 2021
Yes, this idea is completely stolen from Teen Vogue's youtube channel.
I watched every single one of these videos over the past week and got inspired.
I was thinking "what songs could I listen to at any point of my life and still vibe with?” and honestly, it was close to impossible to think of a list on the spot, so I decided to challenge myself. Because it really is difficult, give it a try if you don't believe me. To be honest I'm also curious about what you guys would have on yours so if you end up trying and coming up with a playlist for your life, let me know! I'd love to see them!
My music taste is pretty eclectic and I would never never brand it as a "good" music taste, but there are definitely some bops hidden amongst the rubble of repetitive pop songs, the odd rap track and every Taylor Swift song known to man (I am not saying Taylor Swift is bad music, I love her but, honey). I have stuff that makes me cry as soon as I hear two seconds of the track, stuff that makes me want to dance (emphasis on the want because I never actually go through with the dancing) and stuff that makes me remember that specific memory - One that has no real significance but will be forever attached to that three minute song.
So, from my endless hours of "research" for this post, I think I can come up with a playlist for my life that encompasses all my moods, vibes, memories, as well as being entertaining for you guys to read about or even listen to (yes, I'm probably going to make this playlist in real life and will make it public on my spotify :) )
Okay, here we go
Young God - Halsey
"If there's a light at the end // it's just the sun in your eyes// I know you wanna go to heaven, but you're human tonight"
I'm a huge Halsey fan. There was a ton of songs to choose from but this song is just amazing. The VIBES are immaculate. This song is alternative-pop and has some industrial music sounds. The lyrics are also genius - Halsey tends to create characters in her music, I think every track on Badlands showcases a different persona of herself and this song is no different. This song encapsulates being a reckless teenager; when you run around forgetting that actions have consequences and thinking you're the kings and queens of the world - or "young gods" as Halsey puts it.
Breathe (feat. Colbie Caillat)- Taylor Swift
"It's 2AM// feeling like I just lost a friend"
Ah, A break up song. This song is heartbreaking, I can't listen to it without crying. It's not a bitter love song its more to do with knowing you have to move on and live your life without someone even if it's going to be hard. It's not got a sad melody though, even though the lyrics are slow and honestly its one of my favourite Taylor Swift songs. I remember 10 year old me listening to this song acting as if I knew what a heartbreak felt like when the closest I'd come to was seeing my crush put zero effort into his Draco Malfoy costume for world book day (This is a true story - he wore his own clothes and picked a stick up off the floor and said he was draco. I was not impressed. If you want to impress me, go all out with your costume)
Mind over Matter (acoustic) - PVRIS
"So just trust me, you'll be just fine// I need your trust just for tonight."
I think this is supposed to be a love song, I'm saying I think because I never really listened to it in that context. Everyone has a song and playlist they turn on if they want to cry and this song is it for me. I don't know if its Lynn's angel voice or the acoustic melody or just how pretty everything sounds together - this is my sad song. I found this song a good 5 years ago, I think - I was already a huge fan of PVRIS and i remember hearing this song and fully breaking down. Have a listen, maybe it'll have the same effect on you.
Classic - MKTO
This song is exactly what the title says - a classic. I heard this song a while ago, like maybe 7 years ago and somehow it always manages to find itself on every single 'happy' playlist I make to this day. It's my feel good song; the song I'd sing along to, completely off key, in the shower when I'm in a good mood, or maybe even dance to [insert gif of Taylor Swift dancing in the 'You Belong With Me' video, here]
I Think I'm Okay - Machine Gun Kelly ft. Travis Barker and Yungblud
"Watch me// take a good thing // and fuck it all up in one night"
Okay, I have a confession. I may have a slight, no massive obsession with Machine Gun Kelly - both his music and him. He's definitely one of my celebrity crushes. So when Hotel Diablo came out last year, I downloaded it and went to the gym (oddly missing the gym at the minute). So there I was, humming to the rap tracks (because you definitely hum to rap tracks, Ash) and then this song comes on and I nearly fall off the treadmill. It hit a little too close to home. This is a sad song but more of a volatile sadness - the "crash my car during a breakdown" kind of sadness, if that makes sense. Also Travis Barker on the drums - perfection.
Talia - King Princess
"And in this mess, I think I dug a thousand graves// Talia, I hope you're happy anyway"
I think it's definitely a bitter sweet thing when you end a relationship or a friendship and still see them in your dreams or in your imagination - like you want to remember all the good memories but you want to forget the bad and that's really hard to do when you've created this almost projection of them in your head. King Princess has the prettiest voice and not to mention the coolest vibe. As a youtube comment puts it, this song is a "lightweight bop", it's a song that can simultaneously put you in your feels while also giving you a tune to bop to. An all-round great track.
Treat You Better - Shawn Mendes
Everyone knows these lyrics, I don't need to add them here. Before you think it, yes, I'm basic. But no, that is not the reason this song is on here. My friend and I made this into our "break up anthem" kind-of. Whenever either us blew our chances with someone the other one would blast this song and it would just make everything feel better. Not just because we want Shawn Mendes to treat us better than "he (or she) could" but also because it was like an almost "you don't need them, you have me." kind of song. We blasted this song at one of my friend's birthday parties for this purpose and yes, I think we definitely got judged for how basic we seemed screaming this song into each others faces but who cares - we didn't.
Video Games (remastered) - Lana Del Rey
"I say you're the bestest// lean in for a big kiss // put his favourite perfume on"
Although this song is basically a love song it feel more like a "lust" song. I think the entire song is more to do with desire and infatuation. Lana Del Rey's voice is insane. This song is a mix of different vibes for me; on the one hand, it gets me in my feels but also makes me really want to be in someone's "favourite sundress" but also makes me cry at 2am for absolutely no reason other.
I Wanna Get Better - The Bleachers
"That's why I'm standing on the overpass screaming at myself// Hey, I wanna get better!"
This song kind of represents a turning point for me, like I was stuck in a rut of negativity and I remember not wanting it to stop - I had gotten so used to it being a part of my life. And then I had a much needed epiphany that I really needed to sort myself out. And I once I overcame that it was a lot easier to try and prevent those thoughts and emotions. That's what this song is - a song of realisation. That not everything is going to feel like sh*t. And yes I have definitely screamed these lyrics at myself.
In and Out of Love - Oh Wonder
"Right when I thought my days were done// you showed the sun to me"
If I ever get married, this song is going to be played. It is definitely one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard. It's essentially about a couple telling each other that their life is better having met each other, that if it wasn't for their love they'd be surrounded by impermanent relationships with the wrong people and just surrounded by negativity and unhappiness all round. The melody and the lyrics almost juxtapose each other; Oh Wonder describe a permanent, grounded, safe relationship but the tune is so delicate it seems almost fragile - the complete opposite of their love. This adds to the beauty of the whole track in my opinion.
Are You Bored Yet? (feat. Clairo) - Wallows
"I don't know where we're going// But I'd like to be by your side"
This is a relatively new song but I am so obsessed with it that I don't think I'll ever get bored. It's almost a soft, summery indie sound - maybe a "drive around when the sun is setting and feeling the warmth on your skin" kind of vibe. I think I love the sound nearly as much as I love the lyrics. It's acknowledging that love and relationships aren't always going to be straight forward and perfect and sometimes there are doubts and issues but talking helps alot. yes, I genuinely feel like all my relationship advice comes solely from music.
She - Harry Styles
"She's the first one that I see // And I don't know why // I don't know who she is"
The entire album is beautiful and I would pick all the songs if I could. This song is all about the beat for me, its slow, mildly 70/80s sounding and "sensual" (I hate that word but I don't know how to describe it) it’s a song you listen to that makes you feel sort of high, I’m not sure how else to describe it, it feels like everything slows down when you listen to it. If I was falling down a rabbit hole and the fall was never ending this song would fit perfectly with that. Also Do you ever hear a song and get a weirdly newfound sense of confidence? I think that’s what I feel like when I hear this song - I feel f*cking amazing :)
Hope you enjoyed reading, now you all probably know more about me than I'm comfortable with...
